Delmarva Power Requests Delaware Public Service Commission Approval to Recover Money Spent Modernizing the Local Natural Gas System and Enhancing Service for Customers

NEWARK, Del. (Jan. 14, 2022) – Delmarva Power is requesting the Delaware Public Service Commission (PSC) update natural gas delivery rates to reflect the costs associated with modernizing the local energy grid, responding to impactful events like the September flooding in Wilmington, and the implementation of new technology that are part of the company's efforts to provide a world class customer experience. The request seeks to adjust the typical Delaware natural gas residential customer's monthly bill by about $11.41 during the winter months when customer usage is typically the highest. The monthly bill adjustment would be lower during non-winter months when customer natural gas usage is typically lower.

"Our mission is to provide our customers and communities with a world-class experience.  This includes delivering safe, reliable, affordable and sustainable energy service that our customers can count on every day," said Doug Mokoid, Delmarva Power region president. "The need for reliable natural gas service is more important now than ever before. As customers find themselves home more for their working and educational needs, natural gas service supports the heating of our homes and the home life necessary for their families continued growth and future success. This proposed rate adjustment is critical to continuing those efforts and supporting the modernization of our natural gas delivery system to meet increased customer demand for natural gas services in northern Delaware."

Delmarva Power customers continue to benefit from the major enhancements that are being made to the local natural gas system. Key projects to strengthen and create additional capacity in the company's natural gas delivery system have also been critical to meet growing demand for natural gas in northern Delaware and meeting customers' needs.

Over the last year, Delmarva Power has undertaken critical projects to modernize and strengthen the local energy grid in Delaware, such as the Cast Iron Replacement Project, which is an ongoing safety and reliability project replacing an aging natural gas infrastructure with plastic, more durable piping. Additional initiatives include the expansion of natural gas for new customers, providing clean, safe and reliable natural gas service to new areas within Delmarva Power's service area.

Reliability projects are also important to the local economy, as investments in energy infrastructure improve service for customers and drive economic development and job creation in the local economy. The company places considerable emphasis on hiring diverse, local businesses. Delmarva Power's purchase of goods and services from diverse certified suppliers topped $373 million in 2020.

Delmarva Power is committed to helping customers manage their energy bills by providing tools and resources to help them save money and energy.
