NEWARK, Del. (March 18, 2019) – In celebration of Natural Gas Utility Workers' Day, Delmarva Power honors the employees who work tirelessly, day in and day out, to serve 134,000 natural gas customers throughout northern Delaware. They respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on weekends and holidays, and in challenging conditions to keep the gas flowing for customers. The company's crews safely maintain more than 3,500 miles of natural gas pipelines in northern Delaware.
"It's an honor to work with the dedicated and selfless individuals in our natural gas division," said Tyler Anthony, senior vice president & COO, Pepco Holdings, which includes Delmarva Power. "Their relentless commitment to safety and their diligent work ethic maintaining reliable service for customers and modernizing the local natural gas delivery system exemplify the values we strive for as a company."
2018 was a record-breaking year for Delmarva Power's natural gas service. Last winter, Delmarva Power safely and reliably met record-breaking customer demand for natural gas on a single day, when demand on January 6 surpassed the previous record from 2003. Delmarva Power crews also responded to the scene of all natural gas odor calls in less than an hour—a response time that's among the best in the industry and a new milestone for the company.
Modernizing the natural gas delivery system is a core part of the company's commitment to maintaining safe and reliable service for its customers and a focus for many of the company's employees. In 2018, Delmarva Power invested $50 million in natural gas infrastructure in northern Delaware. This included replacing more than five miles of natural gas mains, and upgrading existing natural gas mains with new plastic pipe, which is now the principal material used for natural gas systems because it is more durable and flexible to ground movement. In addition, employees work each day to patrol and inspect natural gas lines, perform regular maintenance, and install new natural gas infrastructure. The money spent on modernization and maintenance efforts continues to enhance efficiency, reliability, and safety for customers.
Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel and remains one of the most affordable home-heating fuels, making it one of the most desirable. Its popularity continues to grow and over the last five years Delmarva Power has added more than 6,000 new customers who now use the company's safe, clean, efficient and affordable natural gas service.
This is the fourth year Natural Gas Utility Workers' Day is being celebrated across the country. This nationwide event is intended to build public awareness about the hard work done by the employees of natural gas utilities.
Delmarva Power joins the American Gas Association and natural gas utility companies across the nation, including Exelon sister companies BGE in Baltimore and PECO in Philadelphia, in honoring natural gas workers.
