NEWARK, Del. (March 18, 2020) – Today is Natural Gas Utility Workers’ Day, and Delmarva
Power is honoring its employees who work tirelessly, day in and day out, to safely maintain more
than 3,573 miles of natural gas pipelines in northern Delaware, serving the company’s 136,000
natural gas customers—particularly during the challenging conditions we are experiencing right now
with the coronavirus (COVID- 19) pandemic. Not only do they respond 24 hours a day, seven days a
week to keep the gas flowing safely for Delmarva Power customers, they are also crucial to
Delmarva Power’s efforts to modernize our natural gas system.

Delmarva Power. "During this difficult time, their commitment to safety and their dedication to their

commitment, especially in the face of challenging and troubling times."
Modernizing the natural gas delivery system is a core part of the company’s commitment to
maintaining safe and reliable service for its customers and a focus for many of the company’s
employees. In 2019, Delmarva Power invested $59 million in natural gas infrastructure in northern
Delaware. This included replacing more than seven miles of natural gas mains and upgrading
existing natural gas mains with new plastic pipe, which is now the principal material used for natural
gas systems because it is more durable and flexible to ground movement. In addition, employees
work each day to patrol and inspect natural gas lines, perform regular maintenance, and install new
natural gas infrastructure. The money spent on modernization and maintenance efforts continues to
enhance efficiency, reliability, and safety for customers.
Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel and remains one of the most affordable home-heating
fuels, making it one of the most desirable. Its popularity continues to grow and over the last five
years Delmarva Power has added more than 8,000 new customers who now use the company’s safe,
clean, efficient and affordable natural gas service.
This is the fifth year Natural Gas Utility Workers’ Day is being celebrated across the country. This
nationwide event is intended to build public awareness about the hard work done by the employees
of natural gas utilities.
Delmarva Power joins the American Gas Association and natural gas utility companies across the
nation, including Exelon sister companies BGE in Baltimore and PECO in Philadelphia, in honoring
natural gas workers.
