Delmarva Power's Intern Program Helping to Prepare Workforce of the Future

NEWARK, Del. (July 29, 2016)-The Delmarva Power internship program entered its 15th year this summer. The 2016 interns are a diverse group of more than two dozen students from 17 different colleges, universities and four high schools. Delmarva Power interns will experience engineering life at Delmarva Power until mid-August 2016.  Their majors range from electric engineering to civil engineering and environmental science.

Over the next several weeks all interns will be exposed to Delmarva Power's 14 different functional departments, receive an inside look into natural gas and electric operations, experience critical infrastructure and reliability work in the field as well as help to protect and conserve Delaware and Maryland's wildlife and environment.

"The internship program is a great way to help grow and develop budding engineers in college or even high school students interested in science, technology, engineering and math, and looking for a more hands-on experience to better understand energy careers," said Gary Stockbridge, Delmarva Power region president.

The program is a for-credit paid internship and focuses heavily on each student's overall comprehension of outside-the-class room and real world experiences as well as encourages problem solving and innovation.  Each intern is required to produce an enterprise project at the end of the term for credit, based on hands-on experience while striving to bring the spirit of ingenuity to the program.

The program also supports diversity and inclusion by providing internship opportunities to many female and minority students.

"I've been exposed to every aspect of the utility and get a chance to work on projects and gain on-the-job training that most students don't experience until they graduate," said Sean Doherty, natural gas intern from University of Delaware.

"It's great to see how the company has valued the internship program over the years. Many of our internship coordinators were once former Delmarva Power interns in my shoes years ago, so they can really relate. It makes the learning environment unique," added Doherty.

"We challenge the students every day to be creative, utilize the experts' experience around them and ask plenty of questions.  Our goal is to help them discover their engineering identity and set the foundation necessary for a career in the field," added Stockbridge.
