NEWARK, DE - During the 2012/2013 school year, Delmarva Power launched (the pilot program) Delmarva Energy Challenge to 56,000 eligible residential customers in Wilmington, DE. The Energy Challenge was a social networking based game that gave customers a fun way to compete with their friends and neighbors to save energy and win prizes for themselves as well as their favorite Wilmington, Delaware, K-- - 12 public school.
Customers that played on behalf of their favorite Wilmington school helped the following winners obtain thousands of dollars in prizes geared toward education and technology enhancement.
Grand Prize Winner $10,000: Conrad School of Sciences
Runner Up $5,000: Highlands Elementary School
Honorable Mention $2,500 each: Warner Elementary School, Brandywine High School, Stubbs Elementary School and Delaware Military Academy
"The success of this year's Energy Challenge was a testament to the popularity of social gaming and the peer to peer influence driving the competitiveness among schools and their supporters as evidence by the more than 2,000 participants throughout Wilmington, DE," said Charles Dickerson, Vice President of Performance Management and Support Services Pepco Holdings, Inc. "This is one of the first programs of its kind, offering valuable energy education to our customers and amazing incentives for our community."
The Energy Challenge was open to Delmarva Power residential customers residing in eligible City of Wilmington zip codes (19801-- - 19806) that weren't enrolled in other pilot programs such as Green Power or Net Metering, and the Peak Energy Savings Credit Program and made possible because of Smart Meter technology. The contest ran from October 1, 2012 until May 31, 2013.
