Power Restored to Approximately 40,000 Customers
NEWARK, Del. - Delmarva Power announced that significant progress has been made with power being restored for the vast majority of customers impacted by severe thunderstorms, which moved through the region in two waves Thursday. The utility expects full restoration by mid-afternoon Friday.
By midnight Thursday, power had been restored to approximately 40,000 customers throughout the company's service territory with the hardest hit areas being Wicomico County, Maryland and New Castle County, Delaware. High winds, lightning strikes, combined with heavily saturated soil, brought down trees into power lines, causing damage to Delmarva Power's electric system infrastructure. Tree and line crews worked as safely and quickly as possible throughout the night to restore service.
"Our coordination with state and local emergency personnel made for a smooth restoration process," said John Allen, Vice President, Delmarva Power Region. "We greatly appreciate the cooperation and patience demonstrated by our customers toward the hard-working crews, but caution that new outages may occur as tree limbs continue to fall and disrupt service and crews switch main power lines off and on to allow them to work safely."
