New High-Voltage Line Planned for Maryland's Upper Eastern Shore
CENTREVILLE, Md . - Delmarva Power will host a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the Goodwill Fire Company, located at 212 Broadway in Centreville, to provide information about the utility's proposal to build a new high-voltage transmission line between Millington (Church substation) and Wye Mills (Wye Mills substation). The meeting will offer the public the opportunity to ask questions about the $31.3 million project which is designed to enhance electric service reliability on Maryland's Eastern Shore, especially for customers in Queen Anne's, Talbot and Caroline counties.
The existing 69,000-volt, single, overhead transmission line, which is currently on single wooden poles, will be replaced by a 138,000- and 69,000-volt, double-circuit, overhead transmission line on more durable, single steel poles. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2014 with completion by June 2015.
Delmarva Power will coordinate the project with other utilities, local municipalities and the Maryland State Highway Administration to minimize disruption during construction. Most of the work will be done within the right-of-way.
" Engineering studies indicate that the new transmission line will help avoid extended power outages, should there be a major problem with the transmission and generation infrastructure," said John Allen, Delmarva Power Region Vice President. "This project is one of several similar transmission upgrade projects planned for the Delmarva Peninsula over the next several years, all of which demonstrate Delmarva Power's commitment to continue to provide safe and reliable electric service for our customers."
Delmarva Power, a public utility owned by Pepco Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: POM), provides safe and reliable energy to more than 500,000 electric delivery customers in Delaware and Maryland and nearly 124,000 natural gas delivery customers in northern Delaware .
