Delmarva Power Enhances Reliability in Southern New Castle County

Transmission Line Upgrades Planned on Existing Corridor for 2012 through 2013

MIDDLETOWN, Del. - In an effort to enhance electrical reliability, Delmarva Power will invest approximately $31 million on upgrades to transmission lines and facilities serving the Middletown and Glasgow areas.

The work is necessary to maintain the company's commitment to safe, reliable electric transmission service for its customers; meet compliance requirements based on updated standards from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) for local distribution companies that maintain transmission lines and substations; and address PJM (the regional power grid operator) projections for power and reliability requirements on the Delmarva Peninsula.

"These projects will enable us to meet new compliance standards for safe, reliable transmission lines," said Glenn Moore, Regional Vice President, Delmarva Power. "All of the work will take place on property that has served as a major transmission corridor for the past 56 years."

Specifically, the work involves two projects occurring simultaneously along the existing transmission corridor that runs west from the Mt. Pleasant Substation, north along the Maryland/Delaware state lines, across the C & D Canal, and then to the Glasgow Substation.

For both projects, most of the work involves replacing the current, double-wood-pole "H" frame style line with two single-steel-pole lines. One set of the new steel poles will replace the existing transmission line and the other set of new steel poles will be used for a new transmission line. Both lines will be the same voltage - 138,000 volts - as the existing "H" frame line. Pre-construction and construction work is expected to start in the spring of 2012 and be completed by May 2013.

Delmarva Power, a public utility owned by Pepco Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: POM), provides safe and reliable energy to nearly 498,000 electric delivery customers in Delaware and Maryland and over 123,000 natural gas delivery customers in northern Delaware .
