Volunteers Needed to Remove Litter
OCEAN CITY , Md . - Delmarva Power is partnering with environmental, governmental and business organizations throughout the region to support the 25th annual Coastal Cleanup this fall.
Volunteers are needed to clean up 60 beach and river locations throughout Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey on Sept. 10, Sept. 17 and Sept. 18. (See attached list for specific information on cleanup sites, times and dates). Each participant will receive an original Coastal Cleanup T-shirt (while supplies last), courtesy of Delmarva Power, the primary corporate sponsor of the event for 21 consecutive years.
"Keeping our beaches and rivers pristine is not only good for the environment but also a benefit to regional businesses since clean coastlines and waterways are vital to a successful tourism industry," said Matt Likovich, spokesman for Delmarva Power, during a Coastal Cleanup kickoff news conference on Wednesday in Ocean City. "Delmarva Power's sponsorship and participation in Coastal Cleanup is an example of our support for environmental stewardship and the local economy."
Coastal Cleanup is part of International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored by Ocean Conservancy, an organization that works to protect the world's oceans. The types and quantities of trash collected during the cleanup will be itemized and analyzed to identify the source of the debris, as well as ways to reduce or eliminate waste.
In last year's cleanup, a record turnout of more than 3,000 volunteers collected an estimated 19,000 pounds of trash. The usual soda cans and cigarette butts were found as well as a few oddities, such as a Japanese sword, bicycle wheel, VCR, insulated pizza delivery bag and a bridesmaid's dress.
