WILMINGTON, Del. -- As customers dig out Thursday from the overnight snowstorm, Delmarva Power asks its natural gas customers in northern New Castle County, Del. to be careful and identify the location of natural gas piping and metering equipment around homes and businesses. Those plowing with trucks and snow-blowing equipment should be mindful of the location of gas meters and piping to avoid damage.
It is important to be careful when clearing snow and ice from natural gas equipment so as not to damage it and accidentally cause a gas leak.
Delmarva Power also reminds customers of the importance of clearing snow from the vents of natural-gas-fired appliances to ensure safe and proper operation of this equipment. These appliances include heaters, water heaters, natural gas fireplaces and clothes dryers.
Heavy snow could hamper the operation of direct vent appliances. These appliances rely on an uninterrupted supply of fresh air to work properly. Blowing and drifting snow could block the intake and exhaust vents, forcing appliances to automatically shut down and possibly cause serious damage to the equipment. Some vents are as low as 12 inches above the ground.
Most appliances have automatic shut-offs that indicate there could be a problem with the venting system. If you experience problems with your equipment, check your exhaust vents first. Customers with questions can call Delmarva Power Customer Care at 800-375-7117.
