Virginia School wins Delmarva Power-sponsored event
SALISBURY , Md. -- The spotlight was on area high school students today during the 27th Annual High School Mathematics Competition at Salisbury University. Seventy-two students from 24 schools in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia demonstrated their proficiency in mathematics on both an individual and team basis.
Broadwater Academy in Exmore, Va., finished in first place in the team competition, while James M. Bennett High School in Salisbury, Md., finished in second place and Indian River High School in Dagsboro, Del., took third place honors.
Colin Parker of Broadwater Academy was the first place winner in the individual student competition, while Chong Zhou of James M. Bennett High School was runner-up and Micah Laremore of Salisbury Christian School in Salisbury, Md., was the third place finisher.
Other participating schools included: Delmar, Laurel, Seaford, Sussex Central and Woodbridge in Delaware; Colonel Richardson, Crisfield, Gunston Day, Mardela, North Caroline, Parkside, Pocomoke, Saints Peter & Paul, Salisbury School, Snow Hill, Stephen Decatur, Washington, Wicomico and Worcester Prep in Maryland; Arcadia in Virginia.
Delmarva Power and Salisbury University's Department of Mathematics & Computer Science cosponsored the event. "We are very pleased to continue our long-standing partnership with Delmarva Power," said Dr. Kurt Ludwick, Mathematics Competition Coordinator. "Their generous support year after year allows us to hold this popular educational event for area high school students."
"Delmarva Power believes in supporting education-enhancing activities, so it is encouraging to see academic excellence recognized in an event like the High School Mathematics Competition," said Matt Likovich, Delmarva Power spokesman.
U.S. Savings Bonds and mathematics-related books were awarded to the top three students, as well as to the students on the three best teams. All students were given certificates of participation and commemorative T-shirts.
