Pepco Holdings, Inc. & Maryland Broadband Cooperative Plan Single Chesapeake Bay Utility Crossing

Joint Effort to Bring More Power and Bandwidth to Maryland's Eastern Shore

SALISBURY, Md. -- Pepco Holdings, Inc. (PHI) and Maryland Broadband Cooperative have entered into an agreement to identify and choose a single utility corridor across the Chesapeake Bay to expand broadband bandwidth and electricity supply on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

PHI, the parent company of Delmarva Power, will use a below-seabed corridor as part of its proposed construction of the Mid-Atlantic Power Pathway (MAPP), a 230-mile, high-voltage transmission line that will improve electric reliability in the region. Maryland Broadband Cooperative is a member-owned cooperative that operates a fiber optic network delivering broadband service to residential and commercial customers in Maryland, especially in the rural areas of the state.

"We're thrilled that Maryland Broadband Cooperative has agreed to work in conjunction with us in selecting a single, viable, bay corridor that will accommodate our respective projects without the need for two separate crossings," said Vince Maione, MAPP Project Manager. "We believe this joint effort will benefit electricity customers on the Delmarva Peninsula and broadband users in Maryland."

"We currently utilize the Chesapeake Bay Bridge as an avenue for broadband service connection to both sides of the bay," said Patrick Mitchell, Maryland Broadband Cooperative President and CEO. "Finding another crossing site will enable us to improve fiber optic service throughout Maryland. Since our company provides special focus on rural areas, this new option will greatly enhance service to customers living in those locations. We're pleased to join with PHI in this venture that will benefit both companies as well as electricity customers and broadband users in the region."

Pepco Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: POM) is one of the largest energy delivery companies in the Mid-Atlantic region, serving about 1.9 million customers in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland and New Jersey . PHI subsidiaries Pepco, Delmarva Power and Atlantic City Electric provide regulated electricity service; Delmarva Power also provides natural gas service. PHI provides competitive wholesale generation services through Conectiv Energy and retail energy products and services through Pepco Energy Services.
