Delmarva Power Recommends Surge Protection for Home Electronic Equipment

NEWARK, Del. -- Delmarva Power reminds consumers of the importance of protecting expensive equipment from power surges, particularly as they buy more computers, printers, fax machines, stereos, televisions and other electronic equipment for their homes.

Reasons an electrical power surge may occur include:

  • Operation of multiple high power electrical devices;
  • Problems with the utility's electrical equipment serving your home;
  • Downed power lines and/or lightning; and
  • Faulty wiring in the home.

Delmarva Power encourages consumers to protect their home electrical equipment with a quality surge protector since such equipment usually has internal circuits that are sensitive to voltage fluctuations. Customers are also warned that power strips are not necessarily surge protectors.

"Many people confuse a basic power strip for being a surge protector and that couldn't be farther from the truth," said Delmarva Power Region Vice President Glenn Moore. "Both power strips and poorly made surge protectors can overheat during a surge and set electrical devices on fire." He added that a quality surge protector will divert the extra electricity into the outlet's grounding wire.

Here's a checklist to follow when buying a surge protector:

  • Contains certification label from an independent testing lab, such as UL or ETL on the package and on the product.
  • R Contains extra features, such as a protection indicator light and an individual switch for each outlet.

Electrical surge protectors can be purchased at most hardware or home improvement stores. Simply plug in your appliance and plug the protector into a wall outlet. Consumers can achieve even greater protection by adding a whole house surge protector to their main circuit panel, which should only be installed by a licensed electrician.
