United Way of Cecil County presented Delmarva Power with its Bronze Award for "Outstanding service to the people of our community," during its 2007 campaign kick-off this week. Delmarva Power was recognized as one of three businesses that increased their contributions the most in 2006.
Ken Gates, Manager Interconnection and Arrangements at Delmarva's New Castle office, serves as Vice President of United Way, Cecil County, and was surprised at the kick-off to be presented with the award.
"I had no idea Delmarva Power was going to be recognized by United Way. I've been working with this organization for more than 7 years because it's the right thing to do. I've seen all the good things that are accomplished as a result of the contributions of Delmarva's employees" said Ken. "I know this sounds like a cliché, but through United Way we are making the world a better place," he added.
United Way of Cecil County Executive Director Robin Spurdle said participation by companies such as Delmarva Power is vital to the success of the organization. In Cecil County, United Way provides funds to more than 30 member agencies which in turn help provide a multitude of services including health care to senior citizens and safe after school programs to kids; emergency assistance to members of our Armed Forces and support for Special Olympians.
"We recognized Delmarva Power and its employees for not only providing us consistent support, but for increasing their contributions from one year to the next," Spurdle said, and then added that "Without companies such as Delmarva Power there would be a lot of people without homes, without food and without medical care."
"We would like to add our congratulations to all of our employees who work to spread the message about United Way to their co-workers, and to all of our employees who participate in this very special campaign," said regional Delmarva Power President Gary Stockbridge.
On October 1, Delmarva Power will launch its 2007 United Way Campaign with the theme, Together, We Matter. The campaign will extend through November 15.
