Delmarva Power Supports 2006 Coastal Cleanup

Volunteers needed to remove trash

Ocean City, Md. - Delmarva Power is once again joining with environmental, civic and business organizations throughout the region in supporting the 20th annual Coastal Cleanup this fall. The effort aims to remove trash from beaches and riverbanks throughout Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and New Jersey.

Volunteers are needed to clean up approximately 75 locations. Most cleanups will occur on Saturday, September 16, while others will take place on other dates in September or early October. Each participant this year will receive an original Coastal Cleanup T-shirt, courtesy of Delmarva Power, which has been the primary corporate sponsor of the event for 16 consecutive years.

"Delmarva Power believes this annual cleanup is an environmental, educational and community event," said Matt Likovich of Delmarva Power's community relations department. "The cleanup benefits the environment, educates the public about the dangers of pollution and brings people together to work on a worthwhile project. The cleanup also helps increase awareness of the need to recycle."

The regional Coastal Cleanup is part of International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored by The Ocean Conservancy, a non-profit group that works to protect the world's oceans. The types and quantities of trash collected will be itemized. The data will then be used to pinpoint the source of debris, as well as target ways to reduce or eliminate waste.

Approximately 2,500 volunteers collected more than 34,000 pounds of trash in last year's cleanup. Typical debris picked up included cigarette butts, beverage containers, food wrappers and fishing gear. Some of the more unusual items included ice skates, shopping carts and a ceiling fan.

Check the list following this news release for specific information on the various cleanup locations.
