Salisbury, Md. - Mathematics took center stage at Salisbury University today when a group of area students displayed their skills in the 22nd Annual High School Mathematics Competition. Fifty-seven students from 19 schools in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia demonstrated their math expertise on both an individual and team basis.
James M. Bennett of Salisbury, Md., finished in first place in the team competition, while Saints Peter and Paul of Easton, Md., and Sussex Central of Georgetown, Del., tied for second place. Charles Sun of James M. Bennett took home first place honors in the individual student competition, while Laura Walter of Indian River in Dagsboro, Del., was runner-up and Amanda Ward of North Caroline in Ridgely, Md., finished in third place.
Other participating schools included: Delmar and Laurel in Delaware; Colonel Richardson, Mardela, Parkside, Pocomoke, Salisbury Christian, Snow Hill, Stephen Decatur, Wicomico and Worcester Prep in Maryland; Arcadia, Broadwater Academy and Chincoteague in Virginia.
Delmarva Power, SunTrust and Salisbury University's Department of Mathematics & Computer Science cosponsored the event. "We are thrilled about our long-standing partnership with Delmarva Power and SunTrust," said Dr. Kurt Ludwick, Mathematics Competition coordinator. "Their generous support allows us to provide this valuable opportunity for area students to showcase their math talents."

U.S. Savings Bonds and mathematics-related books were awarded to the top three students, as well as to the students on the three best teams. Each participant received a certificate of participation and a commemorative t-shirt.
