Free Service Helps Maintain Safety When It Comes to DiggingSALISBURY, Md . – Staying away from utility lines while you dig is as easy as 8-1-1. That nationwide phone number connects you to a free service that will arrange for someone to come to your home or business to clearly mark all underground utilities so you will be able to dig safely. “Since tomorrow is August 11, we hope the date on the calendar of 8/11 will serve as a reminder for homeowners and contractors to call 8-1-1 before starting any digging project,” said Gary Stockbridge, Delmarva Power Region President. “Calling 8-1-1 before digging will help prevent you from accidentally striking electric, gas or other utility lines. Remember, if you make contact with utility lines with digging tools or other equipment, you and others could be seriously injured or even killed.” Whether it’s a homeowner planting a tree or building a fence or a contractor doing some major work, by law, the underground utility locating service must be called at least two days in advance.
