Delmarva Power Completes Restoration from Hurricane Irene

Friday, September 02, 2011

Utility Thanks Crews, Customers and Emergency Service Providers

Delmarva Power has restored service to all customers whose power is known to have been interrupted as a result of Hurricane Irene and who can safely accept electric service.

The conclusion marks the end of a massive four-day effort across Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland after the departure of the storm. Hundreds of linemen from Delmarva Power, other utilities and contractors worked around the clock repairing poles, wires, transformers and other equipment needed to deliver power to customers.

“We want to extend our deepest thanks to all of the field personnel, along with the public and volunteer agencies with whom we have worked, to help the region recover from this natural disaster,” said Gary Stockbridge, Delmarva Power Region President. “We also thank our customers for their patience and understanding during the restoration.”

The company began executing its emergency response plan nearly a week before Irene swept into the mid-Atlantic region. The company monitored the progress of the storm and began arranging for mutual assistance from other utilities. According to unofficial reports, at the peak of the outages Sunday morning, Delmarva Power had nearly 165,000 customers out of service.

The utility recognizes that there still may be outages from he storm that are unreported -- such as customers who are away and eventually will return to report their outage. There also are customers whose homes have been damaged and, at this time, cannot safely accept the restoration of electric service.

Following such a damaging storm, tree limbs weakened by the weather can continue to fall on lines and interrupt service for an extended period. To that end, we remind customers with outages to report them to the company. In New Castle County, Del. and Cecil and Harford counties, Md., call 800-898-8042. In Kent and Sussex counties, Del., and on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, call 800-898-8045. For Delmarva Power natural gas emergencies in New Castle County, Del., call 302-454-0317.
