Area High School Students Participate in Mathematics Competition

Delmarva Power Cosponsors Event

SALISBURY , Md . – Mathematics took center stage at Salisbury University today when a group of area students displayed their skills in the 24th annual Eastern Shore High School Mathematics Competition. Sixty-six students from 22 schools in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia demonstrated their math expertise on both an individual and team basis.

James M. Bennett in Salisbury, Md., finished in first place in the team competition, while Stephen Decatur in Berlin, Md., finished second and Seaford in Seaford, Del., came in third. Derek Wu of James M. Bennett took first place honors in the individual student competition, while Molly Cinderella of James M. Bennett was runner-up and Ross Roessler of Worcester Prep in Berlin, Md., finished in third place.

Other participating schools included: Delmar, Cape Henlopen, Laurel, and Sussex Central in Delaware; Colonel Richardson, North Caroline, North Dorchester, Mardela, Parkside, Perryville, Pocomoke, Saints Peter and Paul, Salisbury Christian, Snow Hill, Washington, and Wicomico in Maryland; Arcadia and Broadwater Academy in Virginia.

Delmarva Power, SunTrust and Salisbury University’s Department of Mathematics & Computer Science cosponsored the event. “We are thrilled about our long-standing partnership with Delmarva Power and SunTrust,” said Dr. Kurt Ludwick, Mathematics Competition coordinator. “Their generous support allows us to provide this valuable opportunity for area students to showcase their math talents.”

“Delmarva Power is proud to once again be part of this worthwhile educational activity,” said Matt Likovich, community & communications coordinator for Delmarva Power. “This annual event serves as a useful educational tool for gauging students’ proficiency in mathematics.”

U.S. Savings Bonds and mathematics-related books were awarded to the top three students, as well as to the students on the three best teams. Each participant received a certificate of participation and a commemorative t-shirt.
