Delmarva Power, its Customers and the Salvation Army Partner to Help Customers Deal with Higher Energy Bills

Delmarva Power Vice President Glenn Moore today presented Salvation Army Major Phillip DeMichael a check for $60,000 to help those in need pay their energy bills. The contribution represents the company’s match of donations made by its customers to the Good Neighbor Energy Fund, a program set up by the company and administered by the Salvation Army. Delmarva Power customers contribute to the program through envelopes included with their bills and the company matches those contributions at a level of one dollar for every three dollars donated. The Good Neighbor Energy Fund has raised almost $5 million and has helped more than 55,000 families in need in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia since its inception more than 20 years ago.

“The most vulnerable in our community have difficulties in managing their energy bills in the best of times,” said Moore. “And with projections by the Federal Energy Information Administration of higher energy consumption and higher energy costs into 2030 (www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/aeo) the need for this fund will only grow,” Moore warned.

Major DeMichael said this public private partnership “makes a difference in the lives of those who struggle to pay their heating bill.”

Customers apply for energy assistance through the Good Neighbor Energy Fund by contacting their local Salvation Army Office. Contributions to the fund are made directly to the local Salvation Army office.

Today’s presentation to the Salvation Army is part of Delmarva Power’s Energy KNOW HOW campaign. This campaign is an effort by the utility to focus attention on the customer’s need to KNOW HOW to use energy wisely and save.

Efforts such as the Good Neighbor Energy Fund are important as a safety net, but it is also important for all customers to recognize that they can control their energy bills by controlling energy usage.

“Delmarva Power is committed to helping all customers understand what they can do today to manage tomorrow’s energy bills. There are some simple, free steps everyone can take right now that will start paying off immediately by lowering energy use,” Moore said.
