WILMINGTON, Del. - Delmarva Power and the American Red Cross have joined forces in an effort to educate the power company''s special-needs customers on disaster preparedness.
In the coming week more than 750 Delmarva Power customers who rely on electricity for a serious medical condition will receive a disaster preparedness kit, compliments of Delmarva Power and the Red Cross. The kit was assembled and mailed by the Opportunity Center Inc. in Wilmington, which employs persons with disabilities to perform support services for area companies.
"It''s important for Delmarva Power and the Red Cross to educate our community''s most vulnerable group - people with serious medical conditions - on how to prepare for emergencies," said Gary Stockbridge, president of Delmarva Power.
The kit informs Delmarva Power''s special-needs customers that they will receive advance notice of anticipated power outages due to a major storm threat, such as a hurricane, as part of the company''s Emergency Medical Equipment Notification Program. It also includes a magnet with Delmarva Power emergency phone numbers, storm- and disaster-preparedness brochures and checklists for building a disaster supplies kit.
Stockbridge said the emergency preparedness kit is one of several steps the power company has taken to improve communications with its customers.
"Our special-needs customers are particularly vulnerable because many of them need power to survive. We recognize that if a major storm is headed our way, they need to have all the information available so they can be prepared and make special arrangements if necessary," he said.
Delmarva Power, a public utility owned by Pepco Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: POM), provides safe, reliable and affordable regulated electric and natural gas delivery services to more than 500,000 customers in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia.
