• Smart Meter Opt Out

  • On February 26, 2014, the Maryland Public Service Commission (Order No. 86200*) determined that customers who do not want to upgrade to a smart meter at your qualifying business may opt out.

    The Commission recognizes that there are costs to Maryland utilities to read and maintain meters for customers who have chosen to opt out of smart meters. Effective July 1, 2014, the following fees will be applied to the bill of customers who have chosen to opt out of smart meters:

    • $75.00: Enrollment fee (billed at $25.00 per month, for three months) and
    • $17.00: Monthly meter reading and maintenance fee

    Customers Who Previously Notified Delmarva Power Regarding Smart Meter Deferral/Opt Out:

    If you have previously notified us that you wish to defer your smart meter installation, you do not need to contact us to remain on the opt out list.

    If you have previously opted out but have reconsidered and would like to have a smart meter installed at your qualifying business, please contact us as soon as possible at 1-800-375-7117 or through the website contact form to schedule your smart meter installation. If you contact us by July 1, 2014, you will not receive the additional fees. You do not need to be at your business’ location during a meter installation unless your meter is inaccessible.

    Customers Who Want to Be Added to Opt Out List:

    If you wish to be added to the opt-out list, you can contact us by phone, mail, or online through the website contact form. You will receive a letter confirming your request. The additional fees will be added to your next billing cycle after July 1, 2014. You can contact us by phone at 1-800-375-7117.

    Customers Who Decide to Accept a Smart Meter Prior to July 1, 2014:

    If you have previously opted out but have reconsidered and would like to have a smart meter installed at your qualifying business, please contact us as soon as possible at 1-800-375-7117 or through the website contact form to schedule your smart meter installation. If you contact us by July 1, 2014, you will not receive the additional fees. You do not need to be at your small business’ location during a meter installation unless your meter is inaccessible.

    Customers Who Decide to Accept a Smart Meter After July 1, 2014:

    If you have opted out but have reconsider your decision and would like to accept a smart meter, please contact us within 30 days of receipt of the bill that includes the first opt out installment fee; the fee will be waived if you accept a smart meter installation. You may contact us by phone at 1-800-375-7117, by mail or through the website contact form.
