• Delmarva Power Ready for Summer Storm Season

    NEWARK, Del. (May 25, 2017) – With weather forecasts calling for a potentially active hurricane season this year, ranging anywhere from 11 to 17 named storms, Delmarva Power has worked to upgrade and modernize its electric infrastructure in advance of the summer storm season to help ensure safe and reliable service for its customers. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30.

    Over the past three years, we have invested $425 million on new technology and projects to prepare for hot weather and storms, including upgraded substation equipment and new poles, transformers and associated infrastructure.

    “Our all hazards planning and preparedness efforts address seasonal events such as hurricanes and severe weather,” said Gary Stockbridge, Delmarva Power region president. “Every storm and outage is significant to us and our customers. We encourage all of our customers to participate in readiness activities specific to their household or business with a focus on planning for potential outages caused by weather events. We are constantly at the ready from an operational standpoint, and we continue focusing on improving reliability throughout our service territory.”

    As an Exelon utility, Delmarva Power is able to share resources with BGE, PECO, Pepco and Atlantic City Electric, which allows the company to respond to storms faster and more cost-effectively.

    All Delmarva Power employees prepare for the possibility of storm-related power outages by participating in emergency drills on a regular basis. In addition, we maintain an adequate supply of essential equipment, such as poles, wires and transformers.

    “We believe that preventive maintenance is essential in reducing the potential for service interruptions caused by weather events,” said Stockbridge. “We will continue to make investments over the next several years as we keep our promise to improve reliability, maintain our system and incorporate new technology.”

    Since 2014, we have upgraded 19 substations to support key equipment and infrastructure which can restore customers more efficiently if a service interruption does occur.

    Additionally, we will continue regular tree trimming near power lines to help avoid outages that can be caused by trees and limbs that fall during storms. We recently completed $47 million in vegetation management activities.

    Delmarva Power, in partnership with the Red Cross, local emergency managers and AAA held their annual summer readiness briefing on May 25, 2017.  During the briefing, Delmarva Power and its partners stressed the importance of storm preparedness in advance of the summer storm and hurricane seasons.
