    Nov 30, 2016

SALISBURY, Md. (Nov. 30, 2016) - Recently, Delmarva Power sponsored the 33rd annual Eastern Shore Mathematics Competition at Salisbury University.  The competition is part of Delmarva Power’s ongoing commitment to STEM education throughout its service territories.

60 students from 20 high schools in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia participated in the competition which was co-sponsored by The Klein G. and Mary Lee Leister Foundation and Salisbury University’s Department of Mathematics & Computer Science.  The event challenged student’s math skills to solve probability problems on both individual and team levels.

Probability is basically the study of chance in dealing with patterns and trends that occur in random events. The theory of mathematical probability is over 300 years old and uses statistics and simulations to help determine probability with greater accuracy. Such information is used in the physical sciences, genetics, social sciences, economics, industry, engineering and insurance.

“Delmarva Power thanks all of the young minds who challenged themselves at this year’s competition,” said John Allen, Delmarva Power Regional Vice President.  “We ask that all of the competitors, and their schools, continue to celebrate and share their love for mathematics and embrace every aspect of STEM.  In doing so, they are preparing to become future innovators and leaders in diverse career fields both nationally and globally,” added Allen.

St. Andrew’s School finished in first place in the team competition, while Broadwater High School finished second and Stephen Decatur High School came in third.

Tiger Luo from St. Andrew’s High School took first-place honors in the individual student competition, while John Paris also from St. Andrew’s, earned runner-up and Lucas Murphy from James M. Bennett High School achieved third.

Gift cards were awarded to the top three students, as well as to the students on the three best teams. All students were given certificates of participation and commemorative T-shirts.
