Vandalized Property May Cause Natural Gas Safety Hazard

Recently there has been a rise in damage to natural gas lines and gas appliances in vacant and occupied properties in New Castle County due to the theft of copper materials.

Delmarva Power wants you to know that escaping natural gas from vandalized property poses a serious safety hazard and should be reported immediately.

If you see suspicious activity, please call 911. If you smell natural gas inside or outside of your home, call Delmarva Power immediately at 302-454-0317.

Natural gas is one of the safest and most efficient forms of energy but it must be used appropriately. Because natural gas is colorless and odorless, we add mercaptan, a non-toxic chemical that smells of rotten eggs, to make it easier to detect.

If you suspect a natural gas leak, follow these safety tips:

  • Leave the area quickly.
  • Warn others to stay away from the area.
  • From a safe place outside the premise, call our emergency number at
    1-302-454-0317 or 911.
  • Remain outside until trained professionals arrive and confirm the area is safe.

Delmarva Power also asks its natural gas customers in New Castle County to be mindful of the danger of flood water and natural gas appliances. Any natural gas appliances exposed to flood water should not be used until inspected by a licensed contractor for damage.
