Delmarva Power Begins Pilot Project

Delmarva Power has begun testing various models of new LED (light-emitting diode) streetlights in our service territory for energy and maintenance savings potential. LED streetlights are expected to be about 50 percent more energy-efficient and last an average of almost three times longer than traditional streetlights.

The streetlights will be installed in four locations for a six-month test period across Delmarva Power’s service territory, starting with Wilmington in New Castle County, Delaware. The other locations include: Georgetown, Del.; Elkton, Md.; and Chestertown, Md. Delmarva Power will evaluate the lights for energy efficiency, illumination quality and reliability.

LED streetlight fixtures look and act differently than traditional models. Responses to these new lights have been positive and we want to find out if our customers like them, too. During the test period, we are asking for feedback, which combined with our engineering analysis of the lights’ performance, will play a big part in determining the likely future role of LED streetlights in our region.
